     Wednesday, May 19, 2010 — At a grand opening celebration for their new location, Fitz Flooring staff members proudly displayed the Better Business Bureau (BBB) award the company received for ethics.
     But general manager Gerry Whitton said that the company philosophy was a straightforward one — and one that lead to the business’ success in the current economic climate.
     “Giving back to the community, treating people how you’d want to be treated,” Whitton said, “it’s just common sense things.”
     The company’s customer service philosophy made an impression on BBB judges, as did their generous charity work.
     The support Fitz Flooring gives their employees was also noted in the BBB judgement.
     Their ‘four-way test’ designed to empower their staff members to make the right decisions was explained by Whitton as having employees answer these four questions before making any day-to-day decisions or answering any customer questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will or friendship? And will it be beneficial to all concerned?
     “We empower them to make the decisions as long as they take that into consideration, “Whitton said. “So they don’t have to, ‘Oh, let me check . . .’
     “It can be frustrating for the customer when they go somewhere and they have to check on everything. So we empower them to make decisions on the day-to-day stuff.”
     Whitton added he’s not sure who submitted their name for consideration to the BBB.
     The newly relocated Canmore location is one of four in the company, and Fitz Flooring is now also set to open a third location in Calgary in a matter of weeks, which will bring the total number of stores to five.
     “Things are going well for us and I think the economy is turning around a little bit,” Whitton said.    
     But also credited the attitude of staff members for the companies’ success.
     “We say that we wouldn’t sell something to people that we wouldn’t sell to our own parents,” he said. “I think that in the end that is what got us through the tough times.”
     At a time when the construction industry is slow in Canmore, Fitz Flooring has just moved to 1300 Railway Avenue so that they could expand from their previous location on Railway Avenue not far down the street.
     “It’s a bigger space, and a better space with more exposure,” Canmore-based Sandy Anderson said. “Business is doing well.”
     Previously Fitz Flooring occupied one bay on Railway Avenue, in which they housed their showroom, ware-house and offices, but now with two bays they’ve doubled their space.
     “We’re blessed,” Anderson said. “We’ve been very fortunate.”
